A day in the life of a nation.

We can remember where we were when we first saw the terrible images of the North Tower trailing a line of black smoke across the Manhattan skyline. Was this an accident? Was it a small plane or a airliner? Then the images of flight 175 smashing into the South Tower.

We were under attack. Then the smoke cloud coming from the Pentagon and word that a fourth plane was squawking the highjack code. That plane was later driven into the ground in Pennsylvania.

We were under attack. Not from the rock throwing, flag burning, 'death to America' cowards you see on TV, but a real enemy who has the time, planning and resolve to take American lives on American soil.

Like all Americans, I look on 9/11 as a terrible tragedy. I didn't know anyone who died in the attacks and while I grieved for those lost and prayed for those they left behind, I hoped that the nation would finally wake up to the fact that there are people who want us dead, not just Republicans or Christians, but all Americans right down to your little dog.

As time has passed the grief faded and the resolve was dissipated into a something less. It reminded me of a person who had a mild heart attack. He suddenly found God, the love of his family and the will to change his bad habits. He watched his diet, quit smoking and bought some comfortable walking shoes for those daily trips around his block.

Then something amazing happens, after a few years with no other heart trouble, he doesn't see the harm in a few beers and pizza with the guys a few times a week. Those walking shoes, well they were really ugly and it's been too hot to walk lately. He only smokes a half a pack a day. The closeness to his family has been replaced by the old feelings of jealousy and blame from the past. He hasn't gone to church for a few years now and doesn't know where his Bible is, let alone bringing his troubles to the Lord in prayer.

In a word, he is in denial. He won't visit the doctor because he doesn't want to hear what the doctor has to say. He wants to live his life just like he did before the heart attack. Oblivious to the threat to his life. Maybe he will have a mild chest pain and go see the doctor before it's too late or the last thing he sees maybe the horrified look of his family as he lies on the floor clutching his chest.

My wife thinks I am addicted to blogging.

My wonderful wife, or 'She who must be obeyed' as she is know in our household, thinks that I am addicted to my computer and blogging. That just silly.

I could quit, if I wanted to, I could.

Democrats, take back your party, please.

I was watching the news last night with my 7th grade son. Nancy Pelosi was in full Moonbat mode blaming the President for anything and everything that has happened or has not happened in the Gulf Coast region. He asked the question, "are all Democrats bad?"
Good question.

I explained that at one time, the Democratic Party stood for things that made America great, but that was long ago. I told him that historically Democrats want to spend more on welfare than defense and want the government to be as large and in control of as much as possible in your daily life. That being said, the old Democratic party wanted the best for America, they may have disagreed with Republicans on how to get there, but they strived toward a common goal. American leadership and dominance in the world.

What a difference 30 years make.

My point is that John Roberts has a record. John Roberts appears to be a wonderful, decent family person. But again, we get back to the question about whether you really care, and whether you really have compassion. It's not enough to say you care. It's what you've done. John Roberts' legal career has been about taking away every protection for young girls and women who want to participate in sports, for African-Americans and Hispanics who want the equal, same right to vote as everybody else, for taking away from women who believe they should determine what health care they have, instead of having politicians do it. His entire legal career appears to be about making sure those folks don't have the same rights everybody else does. That's probably not the right thing to do, two weeks after a disaster, where certain members of society clearly did not have the same protections that everybody else did, because of their circumstances. Americans are fair people, and they want a sense of justice. I know Judge Roberts loves the law. I'm not sure he loves the American people.

"I do not think that this president cares about everybody in America".

I know there are millions of center left Democrats who think that President Bush is doing a terrible job. That's fine, but they don't think he is Hitler, or that he wants only poor black people to die in a natural disaster. They think that although John Roberts wouldn't be their first choice, he is a good man and is an extremely qualified justice. They don't like the war in Iraq but they understand that we are there now, and we can't cut and run. We must win this war on the enemies turf. These people used to be the backbone and voice of the Democratic Party, no longer.

The Moveon, Code Pink, Sean Penn, Michael Moore liberal extremists have hi-jacked your party. Please take it back so we can have a thoughtful debate about the issues that face our great nation. Who knows, you may even win an election now and again.

As the Governor of our State is doing battle against the 'Axis of Moonbats', Don Perata, Fabian Nunuez, Jackie Speier and the gang under the dome, he has been fighting a defensive strategy since early this spring.

The Governor is now shifting into campaign mode, as the special election is about 60 days away.
Good for him.

"Clearly, we're organizing our forces here," Mike Murphy, Schwarzenegger's chief political strategist, said in an interview last week. "We're going to make a major effort and we're going to win."

Today the Democrats throw one of their own under the bus to pressure Schwarzenegger to approve drivers licenses for Illegal Aliens.

The Democratic legislators are going to have to explain why they took out a competent, Democratic ... director purely because they are focused on getting this driver's license bill for undocumented workers," Thompson said. "It's a prime example of Democratic lawmakers playing politics as opposed to focusing on good public policy

The Governor will veto the gay marriage bill , saying that it went against the will of the people as they clearly showed in prop 22.

"We cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote," the governor's press secretary, Margita Thompson, said in a statement. "Out of respect for the will of the people, the governor will veto (the bill)."

Again, good for him.

His threatened veto of Lois Wolk's bill AB 1328 forced Wolk to pull it back for an additional 30 days consideration. Hooray for Ahnold.

The governor had apparently requested Wolk pull the bill under threat of veto. Schwarzenegger took the action after apparently meeting with Yolo County Republican insiders, who have been opposed to the legislation.

4 Things that will become apparent when a full review of Katrina is complete.

1 Mayor Ray Nagin did not follow his own evacuation plan. A complete failure.

2 Governor Blanco's turf fight with the White House and FEMA will be seen as one the main reasons why Federal relief was delayed. The Red Cross hasn't faired much better with Blanco.

3 The corruption in the City of New Orleans and Louisiana will be exposed.

4 FEMA should not be under the Department of Homeland Security.

A dumb statement-

Just days before "Southern Decadence", an annual homosexual celebration attracting tens of thousands of people to the French Quarters section of New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina destroys the city.

"Southern Decadence" has a history of filling the French Quarters section of the city with drunken homosexuals engaging in sex acts in the public streets and bars. Last year, a local pastor sent video footage of sex acts being performed in front of police to the mayor, city council, and the media. City officials simply ignored the footage and continued to welcome and praise the weeklong celebration as being an "exciting event". However, Hurricane Katrina has put an end to the annual celebration of sin.

Way to go guys, it must feel good to know that when a tornado strikes a small town of hard working God-fearing people in Kansas, they better get the message. Cancel your subscription to Showtime, I am watching you!

If New Orleans was wiped out because of Girls Gone Wild and Southern Decadence, what do you think will happen to San Francisco?

If God were still in the 'smite your city' business, He had better start with the City by the Bay. If he lets San Francisco exist, he owes Sodom and Gomorrah an apology.

Now is not the time to be timid and I don't think President will. He may not appoint Mike Luttig to the SC, however he will pick a conservative and a young one. The President knows how much is at stake with the courts, the left knows too. Save Alberto Gonzales for when John Stevens retires. Right now you need a good pair of hole cards.

Tribes a great post

I have been around construction for a good part of my life and have heard more cursing than I ever wanted to hear. I used to be pretty good at it too. Now, there are a few times where I looses my temper and curse now and again. When I smash myself with something heavy, or when I spend two hours installing a water pump on my Jeep only to find I forgot to install the gasket.

My point is that there are times when a thoughtfully induced four letter word is not condoned, but rather understandable when making a point. While I don't usually link to R rated post, Bill Whittle from Eject, Eject, Eject has written a post that you should read.

That has nothing to do with me being white. If the blacks and Hispanics and Jews and gays that I work with and associate with were there with me, it would have been that much better. That's because the people I associate with 'my Tribe 'consists not of blacks and whites and gays and Hispanics and Asians, but of individuals who do not rape, murder, or steal. My Tribe consists of people who know that sometimes bad things happen, and that these are an opportunity to show ourselves what we are made of. My people go into burning buildings. My Tribe consists of organizers and self-starters, proud and self-reliant people who do not need to be told what to do in a crisis. My Tribe is not fearless; they are something better. They are courageous.

I only hope that I can find my name among those registered on the membership of the Gray Tribe.

New Orleans mayor fears the CIA will take him out.

I'm not kidding. This is what he said.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he's feeling better about his city, he feels confident he has gotten the attention of Gov. Kathleen Blanco and President Bush, but he said he fears the Central Intelligence Agency may take him out because he's been yelling at these officials.

He didn't say it once. He said it twice.

Last night he told a reporter for the Associated Press: "If the CIA slips me something and next week you don't see me, you'll all know what happened."

Today he told interviewers for CNN on a live broadcast he feared the "CIA might take me out."

I am not sure that the CIA has the resources to take out Mayor Nagin right now, they might be busy covering up the evidence that they killed Justice Rehnquist to avert the media scrutiny over Bush's handling of hurricane Katrina.

It looks like things are about to go into overdrive in the Senate.

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist died on Saturday at his home in Arlington, Virginia, after battling thyroid cancer since October, a court spokeswoman said.

Rehnquist, 80, had experienced "a precipitous decline in his health in the last couple of days," and died in the evening surrounded by his three children, court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said.

Smaller, more nimble.

As anyone who has worked for a large corporation or government agency can attest, change is slow, sometimes agonizingly so. I once heard a speaker tell a story about a small silicon valley company he worked for. One day the entire company held a meeting to address the changing business conditions in their industry. About sixty people were there, and in the course of the day they completely changed their business model from hardware production to software development. One day. They adapted to the market and within a year they flourished.

That is the speed and flexibility that has lead America to the front in almost every endeavor we have attempted. At times this rapid change has lead to mistakes and miscalculation, but taken as a whole, our ability to asses and improvise has made this nation great.

Why should it be any different in Government. How can a huge government agency with layer upon layer of bureaucracy hope to move quickly and adapt to a changing situation? When the President and Congress established the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA was put under it's control, I didn't think that was a good idea. How can another layer of management and a longer decision making tree make for a rapid response to a disaster?

Hurricane Katrina was the ultimate test of how nimble our federal government is. The Feds get a F for speed, but as you can see now by the reports from New Orleans, once they arrive, they arrive in force and bring the cavalry. For that, they get an A+. The problem is the first 48 hours of a regional crisis, what we need is a rapid response force. That force is you and me.

The people who were on the scene first, the real 'first responders' were smaller local charities, churches and local chapters of large charities. Private citizens who know the area and have the equipment to get in and help are crucial. Those folks saved thousands of lives. FEMA and HS should give a small portion of their budgets to fund these smaller more nimble charities and volunteers.

A local volunteer fire department training volunteers with boats on search and rescue. A church with an auditorium with a line of credit at the local Wal Mart or Costo to use for refugees. Every region of every state should have a local outreach and volunteer center. These centers would have back up generators and satellite phones and internet. The would keep a database of names of people who are willing to provide shelter for victims of a disaster. Who has flat bottom boats? A list of 4 wheel drive clubs who can get into places with no roads. Small nimble organizations who feed the homeless everyday. These types of volunteers can give realtime assessments, something that was woefully inadequate in the City of New Orleans following Katrina.

Organizing and deploying thousands of soldiers is not a one day process, but when they get to the scene of a disaster they are the most welcoming sight a wet,tired and hungry taxpayer could hope to see. We need to rethink how we stage assets and how we can work with grassroots responders to buy time until the full measure of federal aid can be brought in.

How prepared are you for a real emergency?

Imagine if you will, being stranded in New Orleans during the height of the looting and lawlessness. Could you survive? Could you protect your family? Could you keep the supplies you stored for this situation from being taken?

This is not a question that most Americans would ever think of. I have thought about it, I believe that I could answer in the affirmative to those questions.

Growing up in the country, I have plenty of experience with small scale disasters. When you live 40 miles from town, the power going out is a regular occurrence. I remember the having to live without electricity for two weeks at a time. Without power, your well does not work, that means no water. You learn to adapt and more importantly, to prepare.

Water is life, most everything else you can do without for weeks. If you have never thought of what you would do if the water from your tap stopped for two weeks, and you could not get out of your house or city, what would you do?

What would happen if the power went out for two weeks and your community had been cut off from the outside world? What if you looked out your windows after the third day to see looters kicking in doors on your block? No 911, no police, nobody to come to your aid. Could you protect yourself and your property?

Scary? You bet.

Please don't think I am some 'survivalist nut' who has a 6 year supply of MREs in my basement, I don't even have a basement. I do not advocate people who have never handled a firearm to go out a buy one to throw in a drawer. That is a recipe for tragedy. I believe that everyone should take a training course before they think of buying a firearm. If you are willing to buy a $200-800 firearm, you should be prepared to purchase a safe to store it in. You will also find the safe very useful for storing all those important documents and heirlooms that are not protected right now.

A firearm in the hands of a trained owner is an essential part of protecting home and family.
A water filtration device that can handle liters of water, not ounces is expensive but not that expensive.
A 3500 watt generator and spare gas cans, safely stored, can be the difference between a week of agony or relative comfort.
A few hundred or thousand dollars in cash, in your safe, can go along way when the lights go out.
With the threat of terrorism as well as a natural disaster always a possibility, you may want to look at your emergency kit. A flashlight and a transistor radio are nice to have, but nothing says 'get out of my house' quite like the sound of a pump shotgun putting a round in the chamber.

One man, doing what he can

I just spoke with Pastor Darryl Johnson of the Walk of Faith Church in Mound Bayou, Mississippi.

He told me the church made it through the Hurricane, Mound Bayou is inland and his congregation is holding up well. In the few minutes we spoke he told me that Walk of Faith Church is taking in refugees from coastal cities and his own home is filled with as many displaced people as it can hold. God Bless those folks in need, and those who are opening their hearts and homes to them.

Pastor Johnson is truly a compassionate man dealing with a tragedy the best way he knows how, appealing to God and getting things done. He said that he is organizing a trip into the more rural areas of Mississippi to help however he can. He says that there are dozens of small, isolated rural towns that are well off the freeways. The large rescue efforts are going into the most populated cities, it is just a logistic fact, they can save more people in a shorter amount of time if they concentrate their rescue efforts there. You can bet that the same tragedies in the cities are being played out on a smaller scale in hundreds of small farm towns in Mississippi and Louisiana. Those people must feel abandoned and all alone.

I asked what I could do to help him and his church with their efforts. I didn't even finish the question when he said "keep us in your prayers", I asked what items he needed to help those with nothing but the clothes on their backs, he was almost embarrassed to ask for financial help. "We need water and food and blankets and everything else" I told him that is seems the best way to get the items he needs is to send money rather than ship the clothes and blankets. He said whatever I could send him would be greatly appreciated and would go along way right now. He said his congregation is giving as much as they can.

I am mailing him a check today, he is one person, among thousands who are making a critical difference right now. I am keeping him and his congregation in my prayers.

I am buying a Toyota Matrix this weekend.

I have been waiting to replace my 1998 Chevy 4x4 truck for some time. It has 137,000 miles on the odometer, but it runs good. I've been wanting a new Dodge four door 4x4 with a Cummins Diesel engine. I have driven all three 2006 full size trucks and decided on the Dodge.

Until now.
With diesel prices just shy of 3.50 a gallon and poised to go higher, I have decided to keep my truck and purchase a Toyota Matrix. The Matrix is based on the Corolla frame, my wife drives an 03' corolla and loves it. The Corolla gets 38 mph highway and the Matrix gets 36 mph. My Chevy truck achieves a whopping 12 mph. I drive approximately 300 miles per week. It looks like gasoline will be 3 to 4 dollars a gallon for a while. Buy ing the Matrix will save about 150-200 dollars a month in fuel costs.

I just hope they get the refining capacity back on line soon.

Living in Northern California, what real disasters do we face?

Other than an earthquake, a good shaker hit Vacaville and Winters around the turn of the century, what should we be preparing for here in the Sacramento Area?

A flood is the most likely disaster to occur in our area I would guess. With no Auburn Dam to protect Sacramento, we are tempting fate every winter and spring. Sacramento is surrounded by levees, if they fail, a few hundred thousand people will be sitting on their rooftops. Maybe the video of what a city surrounded by levees looks like when those levees fail will make people think.

The though of some rattlesnakes and birds having to move out of the Auburn Ravine isn't such a big sacrifice to make when looking at the cost in human lives and property that the Auburn Dam could save. Just remember, when helicopters are picking folks off rooftops in mid-town Sacramento, the rest of America will be watching on the news wondering why those people didn't build the Auburn dam, it would have saved them.

There is no 'other America' to come to America's aid.

As I was listening to Hugh on the drive home today one of his guests, I am sorry I didn't get the name, made a very profound statement. Remember, there is no other America to come to America's aid. That is so true. When the Indonesian tsunami struck, Americans opened their hearts and their wallets to help out. Private donations alone from Americans surpassed 1 billion dollars. That is almost 20% of all relief given by all governments and private citizens. That is what we do, that is who we are.

One of the largest support efforts made by America was the US military. The resources set in motion to help find stranded and isolated victims was a Herculean effort. All the helicopters, hovercraft, and amphibious craft sent into the region cost untold millions, if not a billion dollars.

As some unfortunate people in Mississippi and Louisiana sit on their rooftops for a second night waiting to be rescued, I wonder how many helicopters from Mexico or Canada are flying tonight to help the rescue effort? I couldn't find any stories on the web as of this post.

Travis is a shining example of how duty and honor can overcome a liberal upbringing.

Laurie Loving gave birth to her son Travis under a maple tree 21 years ago. He grew up participating in peace and justice rallies but liked to play with toy guns and plastic soldiers.

He was known around Davis as a polite young man, but one who didn't like to be told what to do.

That's why Laurie felt shocked when her son talked about joining the military after he met a recruiter at King High School.

Years passed. But by the time Travis deployed to Iraq 12 days ago, her dismay had only deepened.

"As a peace and justice activist, I was stunned," she said. "As a mother, I'm terrified."

The reporter Claire St. John's anti war bias is more than evident in her distortion of the Sheehan situation.

Reports of soldiers dying and President Bush's refusal to meet with Cindy Sheehan - a Vacaville mother camped in front of Bush's Texas ranch, demanding to know what her son died for - have made many drop their support for the war.

President Bush has already met the Sheehans last year, in her own words- "I now know he's sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis," Cindy said after their meeting. "I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith."

What a hack job by a reporter with an agenda.

The liberals in England don't get it.

I am always amazed by the stupidity of people who are willing to embrace those who wish to destroy them.

Britain's culture of tolerating radicalism is in the national interest and should not be swept away by the urge to get tough.

But the "covenant of security" and the British approach to tolerating radicalism is not just an expression of political correctness. It serves some hard-headed national purposes. It recognises that there is not one but several Muslim communities among the 1.5 million Muslims in Britain, all with their own national norms and attitudes to culture and assimilation. Self-policing and a better relationship with the police, working with the grain of different national and religious minorities, is fundamental to preventing our gentleman-amateur suicide bombers from becoming figureheads for a national revolt among Muslim youth.

Do the national norms and cultural assimilation include the bombing and murder of innocent British citizens? Good Grief!

Labradors, not just a fashion accessory.

You can have all those little 'feeder' dogs, I will take the lumbering Labrador for my companion dog.

When Archie, a black labrador, lost his owner on a lonely Scottish station, he jumped on the first train home.

Not only did the dog catch the right train, he got off at the right station, Agence France-Presse reports.

Closed-circuit television footage shows the dog waiting for his master at the station before watching the Aberdeen to Inverness train pull in.

Unable to find his owner, the labrador decided to avoid a long walk home by nipping aboard the 20.38 train.

He got out at the right stop, Insch, 12 minutes along the line.

I just wish I had a smarter specimen than 'Jake the wonder dog'.

The return of The Nut Tree

Vacaville is a small but growing town between Sacramento and San Francisco where I-80 and 505 converge. At that crossroads once stood a little slice of heaven.

It grew into one of California's favorite roadside stops with a renowned restaurant that hosted not only children and farmers, but world leaders and celebrities

The Nut Tree was a cross between a mico-Disneyland, a fruit stand and a restaurant. As a kid, I loved when my family would stop there. I would ride the small gauge train and the big wooden rocking horses in front of the gift shop. I must have been 10 years old when my father bought me a huge print of a Curtis P-40 Warhawk that adorned the wall of my room until high school, or until I could convince my mom to let me put up the Farah Fawcett poster. I was able to take my son for a visit before they demolished it, the train had stopped running for a few years, but he did love the rocking horses. Now it looks as though The Nut Tree is going to be rebuilt, almost.

If all goes according to plan, next summer will see completion of the first phase of a new Nut Tree, with a family amusement park, specialty retail, a court for bocce, and several eateries.

I am sure that my mother and father thought it was just a tourist trap, but seen through my 10 year old eyes, it was the coolest place.

How utterly and shamefully disingenuous and repugnant can a 'man' be? The only closely analogous situation to this that I can come with would be to evict a woman from her home the week she had twins, tow her car, and call child protective services to report her for putting her babies out on the street ..while laughing at her. Protestapalooza

Gathering forces will soon meet in Crawford Texas, combining to make the perfect political storm. For the media that is.

As much as I support the ideals behind Move America Forward, I must say that I don't see the benefit in the protest, counter protest strategy. The national media will portray Deborah Johns as a ultra conservative-hick-patriot, while Cindy will be made to look like a well spoken, thoughtful person of conscious, wanting to speak to a President with whom she has a grievance.

I would wager that we will see video of the pushing and shouting on the news every night this weekend. The only winners in this protest battle will be the media. They are bored to death waiting in this little hick town in Texas for the President to do something worth reporting, it is hot and they are not in a good mood. They will film for hours and interview dozens of people from both sides, only to find the best looking, semi-rational anti war protesters and the angriest war supporters. That is the story the want to tell and they will tell it.

These will be the faces of The Protestapalooza Tour, coming to Washington DC in September and to your city soon. Now if they can only find a sponsor for the tour, well, Camp Cindy already has her corporate supporters.

Kurilla was running when he was shot, but he didn't seem to miss a stride; he did a crazy judo roll and came up shooting.

On top of trying to promote Australian values in Islamic schools, Prime Minister John Howard said the Government would monitor what was said in certain schools and mosques to ensure they did not foster terrorism.

Mr Howard was blunt when asked whether he was prepared to "get inside" mosques and schools to ensure there was no support for terrorism.

"Yes, to the extent necessary," he said on Southern Cross radio.

Who Would Jesus Assassinate?

When ever I see the name Pat Roberts in the headlines, I know he has said or done something stupid. This is his most recent example.

You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war, and I don’t think any oil shipments will stop.

Leaving the question open as to the effectiveness of assassinating a foreign leader who has not called for attacks or Jihad on America, what purpose does Roberts serve in sending that message for the world to see? I have never been a fan of televangalists. They rub me the wrong way. Most of them plead weekly that unless they hear from you this week, they will have cut programming in your area. The Great Raid - a great lesson

I know that Hugh has been all over this, but I want to throw in my two pennies.
As a film, I give it an overall B-. The back story of the love interests slows down the pace at times and the film never fully develops the characters of the raiders.

As a story that needs to be told, I give it a A.

Here is the perfect example of the Japanese culture at the time. A culture that embraced violence to achieve it's goal of regional domination. The Japanese were extremely brutal to those they captured or defeated. The death rate of POWs held by the Japanese is close to 30%. That is staggering when you consider that the death rate for Americans under German capture is 4%. My point is that if you looked at the culture of the Japanese in 1942, you could easily surmise that they will never change and America could never turn this nation into a democracy. You would be wrong

The reason that Japan is a democracy today, and the reason they avoid military confrontation at all costs is the four generations that have instructed their children that war is a terrible thing.

I want every terrorist's mother in the middle east to teach their children that if you attack America, you will bring death and ruin to your homeland. You can't do that with half measures in a 'sensitive' war. You can't do that by cutting and running home. You must destroy them.

I would also like the next generation of Iraqis to teach their children about the how the US gave them back their country.

The Democrats have what I consider to be a George McClellan moment here.

While the Union army was marching over an abandoned Confederate campsite, a private found three cigars made by a Confederate staff officer. On the paper surrounding the cigars was written the special orders 191 written by Lee explaining to all of the Confederate generals what his moves were going to be before the battle. Apparently, accidentally two copies of the order were given to one of the Confederate generals. That general's staff officer, for unknown reasons got hold of the extra copy, thought it was just ordinary paper and used it as a cigar wrapper.

McClellan had in his hands the instrument with which to defeat Robert E Lee if he chose to act quickly and decisively. He did neither. While the battle of Antietam was considered a victory for the Union, the opportunity to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia was lost.

Most liberal pundits at this point think of the Rove situation or Cindy Sheehan, but they would be wrong. The plan to put Hillary in the White House in 2008 was drawn up by the Democratic Leadership Council.

That is a message that could win back every Reagan Democrat and put States like Ohio and Florida back in the blue column. To implement this agenda, a radical change would have to take place in the Democratic party. The Michaell Moore, Cindy Sheehan, Maureen Dowd, Dick Durbin wing of the Democratic party will have to be denounced for the extremist they are. The DNC will have to boot Howard Dean and tell George Soros and the big money socialists to either get on board, or spend your money propping up Air America. Heck, even Zell Miller would come out of retirement to speak at the Democratic convention this time.

A Clinton /Liebermann or Biden ticket with this agenda as its platform is a huge winner for the Democrats. Democrats 53% Republicans 47% would be my point spread for this. I don't have a clue as to the opponent from the Red States, but even a strong ticket like George Allen and Rick Santorum would be in for the fight of their lives.

Will they do it? Not likely, especially if Republicans show any weakness in the 06' election from war fatigue or the Rove scandal. The hard left will see any gains in Congress as a justification oftheirr strategy. They will win the battle and loose the war.

I couldn't sleep the other night and was flipping channels and found Noah Feldman talking Middle East politics on The Charlie Rose show. He gave his view on the problems with Iraq, some of them I agree with, even though he is a leftie.

The two things I took away from show was his view on the winner of the war in Iraq and the Gaza pull out. He says that Iran will win the Iraq war. He could be right in the short term. The other point he made was the pull out from Gaza may have more to do with demographics than peace. He says the birthrate of Jews in Israel and the birthrate among the Palestinian citizens in Israel is lopsided and if Israel doesn't consolidate it's population, it will soon be a voting minority in it's own country.

Something is terribly wrong.

It is opening day at the Yolo County Fair and the temperature has not reached 100 degrees. Call it climate change, call it magic from those little elves that make cookies in that tree, whatever it is, I like it. One our friends in FFA is showing a hog at the County Fair and a ram at the State Fair. He is a busy camper.

One of things I like most about the fair is the interaction with people and livestock, besides the corn dogs. I posted on the radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir receiving 30 months for his role in provoking the Bali bombings last week. Well I have good news, I didn't save a bunch of money on my car insurance, but Bashir is getting an early release from prison!

The father of a UK Bali bombing victim says the early release of jailed militant cleric Abu Bakar Bashir will allow him to continue to spread poison.

Bashir, the alleged spiritual head of the al-Qaida-linked terrorist group Jemaah Islamiah, is one of some 53,000 inmates receiving sentence reductions to mark Indonesia's independence day on August the 17th.

He was convicted in March of conspiracy in the Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians and 28 Britons, and sentenced to serve 30 months.

The Supreme Court rejected his appeal earlier this year.

The father of 28-year-old Daniel Braden, from Brighton, East Sussex, was one of the victims of the attack.

He says relatives of victims will feel quite bad about the reduction, and that Bashir should remain incarcerated and not be given the oxygen of publicity to spread his poison.

Here is a thought, if you want to celebrate you nations independence day, don't release those who want to kill you.

I visited Chico State as a senior in High School during 'Pioneer Days' back in the 80s, back before I knew better. I thought it would be a great place to go to college. An inmate trying to escape from the downtown Sacramento County Main Jail was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon after falling from the undercarriage and being run over by a bus full of inmates leaving the facility, authorities said.

A free, all expense paid trip to the Sacramento County Morgue! That right, for being stupid enough to try to escape from jail by holding on to the underside of a corrections bus, and getting run over for your troubles, you get a free toe tag.

What a day.

After finishing my day at my real job, my wife called and said that one of our cows had prolapsed her uterus. If you have trouble imagining such a thing, just think of having your internal plumbing hanging outside. Not a pretty site and lethal to the cow if it cannot be fixed. As I drove to the ranch, I stopped at the local Longs Drugs and bought a needle lit that contained a large curved carpet needle and bought a package of dental floss for a suture. When I arrived I hooked up my trailer and loaded a few panels to make an alley to get her in the trailer so I could take her down to the chute for surgery. I will spare you the details, but the process included your truly, turf surfing behind said cow a few yards because I didn't have my saddle and thought I could rope her on foot. After an hour of me playing both cowboy and rope horse, we shut her in the trailer.

When she made into the chute the fun part began, my wife pushed the prolapsed uterus back in and tried to disinfect as much as possible. I took the carpet needle and floss and sowed up 'naughty bits' to keep the uterus in, leaving a large enough opening for her to urinate. She seems fine and we will keep an eye her for a week or two before we remove the suture.

I just came out of the shower and I am proud to report, I smell almost human again.
I will sleep well tonight. Just another fun filled day in the life of a part-time cattle rancher. Sometimes, I think a fish tank is all the livestock I can handle.

Starting my new job.

Oh, by the way we are getting ready to pour 150 yards of concrete and it will be 107 degrees on Friday. From the frying to the fire, they say, and it could be taken literally this week. I started my new job on Monday and I believe I am going to like it.

My first two days working among the livestock and the University facilities, I feel like I have been here for 5 years. The people that I work with are pretty cool, my supervisor takes his lab to work and he is the shop mascot. All in all, pretty cool, except the temperature which is anything but cool.

In a ru-buff to Charles Krauthammer's piece, 'Give Grandma a Pass'. Colbert King from the Washington Post says that racial profiling for terrorist is bad.

What the racial profilers are proposing is insulting, offensive and -- by thought, word and deed, whether intentional or not -- racist. You want estrangement? Start down that road of using ethnicity, national origin and religion as a basis for police action and there's going to be a push-back unlike any seen in this country in many years.

To that line of politically correct thinking, I say, horse feces. Krauthammer has it right.

This is not a stereotype. It is a simple statistical fact. Yes, you have your shoe-bomber, a mixed-race Muslim convert, who would not fit the profile. But the overwhelming odds are that the guy bent on blowing up your train traces his origins to the Islamic belt stretching from Mauritania to Indonesia.

Yet we recoil from concentrating bag checks on men who might fit this description. Well, if that is impossible for us to do, then let's work backward. Eliminate classes of people who are obviously not suspects.

VDH keeps the focus where it should be.

Quite simply, Islam is not in need of a reformation, but of a civil war in the Middle East, since the jihadists cannot be reasoned with, only defeated. Only with their humiliation, will come a climate of tolerance and reform, when berated and beaten-down moderates can come out of the shadows.

The endangered species act strikes again.

Some Yolo County ranchers could see some of their property tied up in a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to protect the California tiger salamander.

At stake is $2.4 million in lost development opportunities related to proposed restrictions on about 6,000 acres in the Jepson Prairie area south of Dixon, according to a newly released economic analysis of the proposal.

Governor Gray Davis sighting!

I was driving along this morning, sipping my coffee from the Java Station in beautiful downtown Esparto, when I heard Eric Hogue tease that former Governor Gray Davis would be on the air shortly. I almost drove off the road. I can't think of a analogy other than King George III wanting to tour Lexington and Concord after the revolutionary War to see the sites. KTKZ and Eric Hogue Show is where the recall of Gray Davis was born.

I have never been a fan of Governor Davis, he seems to me like the character Captain Sobel in 'Band of Brothers'. Sobel was great behind the scenes, micro-managing and keeping the upward mobility of those under him subservient to his own ambition. However, when the time came for real combat, when the lives of his men depended on his decisions, he folded under the pressure like a WalMart lawnchair.

So what happened to Governor Davis? His whole political life had been the pursuit of higher office. You can take many paths to get ahead, the best way is through strong leadership. Gray Davis chose a path to higher office by avoiding the landmines of politics, tough decisions. As long as no one can tie a mistake to you, and you alone, you can always deflect the negative press long enough for them to move on to the next scandal. I can imagine his stomach turning when he won the Governorship election night. Oh crap, what have I done?

When Democratic control of the State legislature became a juggernaut, he was scrambling to keep his power and authority in the political process. When the energy crisis hit, the dot com bubble burst and revenues declined, he was faced with real problems. These were challenges that he was simply not up to. When the bullets started flying he froze, and we suffered.

The interview he gave to Eric Hogue was honest, direct and thoughtful. I hope the Eric, Murray and the boys can get the full transcript up on the blog soon.

As the battle over 17,000 acres in Yolo County heats up, here are a few views from both sides, and a little commentary.
In this corner, the big government types, and their backers.

"The Yolo Board of Supervisors has a long-standing tradition of agricultural and open space preservation. Simply stated, our goal is to protect more than 17,000 acres of prime farmland, water, gas, flood control and wildlife habitat resources for the public benefit.
One final point: We do not answer to investors, but to the people."

You don't answer to investors? The County does not have the money to seize the Conaway Ranch so it is seeking outside financing. Who you ask would loan the County the millions to make the deal happen? The Rumsey band of Wintun Indians. The same tribe, who just two months ago, received a special exemption to build an 18 hole golf course on farmland protected by the Williamson Act.

Does anyone else see a conflict of interest in lending money to the same agency you negotiate with to expand your casino operations.

On the other side, people who don't thing much of imminent domain used in this way. Most likely, conservatives. But I can't be sure.

From my vantage point the county supervisors are executing a plain old "land grab," not for the protection of the assets, but to try to squeeze some type of financial leverage in the hope of fattening the county treasury down the line. Unfortunately, they have no money, and an ultimate cost to the county in legal fees, court fees, appraisal fees, a jury awarded price which might exceed $100 million plus interest for the three to five years of litigation could be very expensive.

Then there are those who just like to get down to the facts.

The Supervisors already have the power to approve or disapprove all development and have the authority to allow changes to general plans and zoning laws; and the owners may not develop the Ranch unless given permission to do so by the county. That can all be done without acquiring the property at a cost of $60 million, which the county doesn't have, and won't interfere with private property rights of the current owners; and won't curtail the public use of some of the land which the owners already sponsor and promote.

Wasting time with God.

In a sermon series at my church, appropriately named "wasting time with God" I have discovered a very interesting phenomenon. The more quiet I am, the more I am open to God. I know that some of you out there will scoff at this, thinking that this guy actually believes he talks to God, what a loon.

One of our pastors gave us a challenge, find the smallest, darkest room in the house, the one without windows or any other distracting items in it, and stay there alone for 30 minutes. Don't bring a Bible or book, and don't have a radio or TV within earshot, you may even want to bring a fan or something that can generate some white noise. When you know you will not be disturbed for 30 minutes, close the door and start listening. Don't think about what's for dinner, or if you need to pay the light bill tomorrow, just be still and listen. Set a timer outside the room and don't check to see how long you have every minute or two.

Time will creep by. You may want to try 15 minutes first.

Jesus did this many times throughout the new testament. He went out alone to pray, or went inside a room alone. You will find it somewhat uncomfortable at first, most people don't spend much time being quiet and still. You may start thinking about God's purpose for you or a problem you have been wrestling with may start to unravel, but the main goal is just to be in the presence of God.

My days have been exceptionally hectic the past two weeks, I am starting a new job Monday, my son's birthday was this past weekend, and I am trying to wrap up all my projects at my current job. I have not made much time for God the past two weeks. I have been to Church, but that is not the same as spending time or 'wasting time' with the Lord. I would be embarrassed to tell you how much television I have watched, or how much time I spent doing things that are not very important. I have not chosen to spend time with God. With all the things happening in my life right now, I can't think of a better way to spend my time than 'wasting it' with God.

Eminent domain an eminent threat.

Where are the liberals on this? I listen to Babs Boxer and Chuckie Schumer talk about the Democratic party standing up for the little guy against corporate America, why then, did the liberal members of the Supreme Court not stop the City of New London Connecticut from seizing the home of Susette Kelo and give it to a private company for 'Economic Development'?
Who stood up for the little guy? The conservatives.

I hope you don't own a home, farm or attend a church near a freeway off-ramp, transit center, or downtown, because your property could be more valuable to your City, County or State if they tear it down and build condos, stripmalls or a Casino. They get your property, they get more tax revenue, the community gets more jobs, no one is hurt. Except you, the person who used to own a nice little house, or farm that you wanted to give to your children, you get a check based on whatever the government says your property was worth.

Sound great, where do I sign up?

Lets tear down the Capital Christian Center and give it to Costco. The location is great, Highway 50 frontage and just think of the tax revenue the county would get. It's just those ignorant Bible thumping Bush voters that go there, why should they keep the County from getting our hands on such a fine piece of real estate? File the paperwork and make them build a church out in the stick where they belong. You think that is not going through the minds of City and County planners around the country?

There is hope. My local Congressman, Doug La Malfa with his partner in the California Senator Tom McClintock have proposed new legislation to limit the circumstances where the government can seize private property.

As a farmer, I hold the value of property ownership and enjoyment as a paramount right and with the recent Supreme Court decision occurring in such close proximity to the celebration of our independence 229 years ago, I wonder if those farmers, colonists and settlers that rose up then would not expect the same of us now, especially those of us elected and sworn to protect these and our other constitutional rights.

The notion that government can place a higher value on one person's activity and use of their own assets over someone else's is an elitist and dangerous enterprise that connotes the totalitarian thinking of a few making value judgments over the masses. I believe this is contrary to our most fundamental constitutional rights.

You sunk my Battleship!

Don't you hate it when that happens. The President sunk the hopes of the Democratic left with his nomination of Justice Roberts. All the millions of dollars they have in their coffers just waiting to smear this nomination will go for not. Roberts will be confirmed, and by a large margin.

Among Democrats, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (Conn.) may well be the most crucial voice in the Gang of 14. Republicans were pointing last night to a statement he made last week that appeared to say that he saw no justification for a filibuster of Roberts, but an aide said last night that he was misinterpreted and would wait for a fuller examination of Roberts's record before making any judgment about his suitability

The big question now is will the left keep their money for a fight down the road or will they spend it in a loosing effort to Bork Justice Roberts? They have to try, this nominee will swing the court to the right by enough to have those 5-4 rulings go the other way. The left can't take that chance. They must try to defeat Roberts. There will be the Alberto Gonzales should have been refrains from the left, and they will be on every morning show explaining how the President missed his chance to nominate a centrist.

Senator John Kerry,(reporting for duty) says that -

“The American people expect the Senate to fulfill its duty to conduct a thorough, independent review of any nominee, and I intend to do exactly that. I hope Judge Roberts and the White House are forthcoming about his qualifications, background and constitutional philosophy so the Senate can act with all the facts. There‚’s too much at stake to do anything less.‚”

Qualifications, background, constitutional philosophy, John? Were you asleep when he was confirmed unanimously by voice vote two years ago? He has been through the FBI full background investigation more than once. He was supported bya bipartisan group of legal experts in his confirmation hearing to the DC Circuit, what more do you want Senator?

This will be interesting and fun to watch the left spin this into something it is not.

A cowboy in San Francisco

First of all, it's hot. The forecast is for 106 today, so the family and I are heading to the City for the day. I love San Francisco. It is truly one of America's most beautiful cities. The people tend to run from one extreme to the other, and some which defy classification. But I don't let the nut-jobs ruin my time there. We are heading to the Baker Beach, Golden Gate Park and then to Union Square for some shopping. We may hit Pier 39 to watch the Sea Lions, it's my daughter's favorite.

Some of my rural friends give me strange looks when I tell them about going to the city. I think they are intimidated by the liberal people and the very prominent gay scene. I know what areas to stay out of, and that helps. I have explained the gay lifestyle to my son, so he understands what going on when he sees two men walking down the street hand in hand. I just don't want to explain what is going on at the S&M parade. So we steer clear of the Mission district.

I hope we don't get caught in traffic as folks from the valley head to anywhere cool to escape the 6th day over 100 degrees.
