It seems that the left, especially the fever-swamp left, suffer from such myopia they cannot see the double standard they set because of their hatred for the President. To be a member of the progressive swampers, you must pass a simple test. You must believe the following.
George W Bush, because he is a conservative Christian, doesn't care if he brings about Armageddon, he wants to meet Jesus anyway.
The left does not however, believe Iran's President Ahmadinejad when he says he wants to actively bring about chaos to hasten the return of the Mahdi or 12th Imam to usher in the global Islamic republic. Chaos equals Armageddon folks.
The left believes George W Bush's lack of pre war planning and preparation has caused a quagmire in Iraq that we will never extract ourselves from. Just read anything by Paul Krugman.
They also react with shock when plans that may include a tactical nuclear bunker busters are considered to stop Iran from attaining a working nuclear weapon.
The left does believe Ahmadinejad when he says that the uranium they are enriching will be used for a domestic energy program. Iran sits on one of the worlds richest oil fields on the planet.
finally, to get your lapel pin and secret Charlie Sheen ground zero decoder ring, you still must believe the war in Iraq is still about taking their oil.
So lets look forward to the winter of 2007 with Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House of representatives. (sounds of fast forwarding to the future)
Articles of Impeachment have been filed and they await action from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
On a strict party line vote, a resolution for the immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq is passed and sent to the President. (with a little backdoor deal, sign it and we will waive impeachment)
Iran tests its first nuclear bomb. Arab crowds throughout the middle East celebrate, screaming nuke Israel, nuke the Jews!
Iran's President claims to have an EMP warhead mated to a mobile Shahab 4 missile bought from North Korea. He states that any interference from the West when Iran wipes the Jews from the face of earth will be met with an EMP exploded over the US causing a total failure of the electrical, transportation and communications infrastructure.
Pelosi and Reid hold a news conference to strongly denounce the Iranian President and ask that the issue be referred to the UN's Security Council for resolution.
(sound of flashback ending)
AAAHHHHH!
What a nightmare.

Are you in favor of nuking Iran? Of invading Iran?
Conventional strike, or a tactical small yield nuclear strike or helping Israel with air tanker support or covert action, or what ever it takes shot of an invasion to keep that mad man from getting a working nuclear bomb.
This uranium is only enriched to 3.5%. You need upwards of 80% to make a bomb.
With that in mind, talking about nuking them is rather premature, wouldn't you say?
No. as a matter of fact this is exactly the right time to be telling Iran about the very serious consequences of Ahmadinejad developing a working nuke.
Would you rather wait until he has one?
All throughout history there have been times when nations should have crushed a gathering threat and decided to wait, hoping that the situation would go away.
Hope is not a plan. Ask the Poles, the Brits, the Dutch ect. ect.
The UN security council isn't going to do a thing....
"Would you rather wait until he has one?"
That's ten years out on the near side, but answering anyway: I'd rather wait for the next Iranian revolution and get in good with whoever gains power.
Iran ought to be allowed to develop nuclear energy, at least until renewable non-hydro/non-nuke renewable power production is cost efficient.
"All throughout history there have been times when nations should have crushed a gathering threat and decided to wait, hoping that the situation would go away."
Sure, but what qualifies Iran as a threat that must be dealt with today? They're a signatory to the NNPT. Denying them peaceful nuclear technologies just gives the leaders ammunition to drum up anti-West sentiments.
Eric, I can almost hear the moral equivalency in your comments. Iran is just another country, they are no different than we are. We have nukes, their neighbors have nukes, why not Iran?
Here are three questions you must answer before you give the thumbs up to a nuclear Iran.
Is Iran the leading state sponsor of terrorists and Islamic revolutionaries in the world today?
Have the Iranian Mullahs and their President Ahmadinejad called for the extermination of Israel in one great attack?
Is the thought of Iran burning fossil fuels to supply themselves with more power than they will ever need, more damaging to the environment than Ahmadinejad exploding nuclear bombs over Tel Aviv and Haifa?
Have
"Is Iran the leading state sponsor of terrorists and Islamic revolutionaries in the world today?"
Possibly, probably.
"Have the Iranian Mullahs and their President Ahmadinejad called for the extermination of Israel in one great attack?"
I think so. I also think Iran's leaders are smart enough to realize it's a no-go.
"Is the thought of Iran burning fossil fuels to supply themselves with more power than they will ever need, more damaging to the environment than Ahmadinejad exploding nuclear bombs over Tel Aviv and Haifa?" Possibly, probably. The thing is that as signatories to the NNPT, we are compelled to help Iran develop peaceful nuclear technology. I believe having Russia provide Iran with nuclear fuel rods, as they've offered, is an excellent resolution to the situation.
